The 7th Annual Ernie DiBella Memorial Matches

While enduring severe boredom at work, Matt Bielawa recalled the good times in high school. He remembered all the worryless days of doing little or no work, hanging out with friends, and playing golf. Matt continued by remembering one of the greatest weekends of his life, the 1995 Ryder Cup Matches, held at Oak Hill CC in Pittsford, NY. He thought to himself, "Why can't I play in that type of tournament?" Unwilling to succumb to the simple answer to this question (because he was a poor golfer), Matt starting to think of creating a tournament like the Ryder Cup, and the Ernie DiBella Memorial Mathces were born.

Named after famed Pittsford Sutherland gym teacher Ernie DiBella, the DiBella memorial calls upon its competitors to remember the good times of high school, and to battle in an intense three-day war of golf.

The first matches were played at CenterPointe Golf and Country Club in Canandaigua, NY, and were won by a team comprised of Matt Bielawa, Dave Kleinman, and Joe Mathias, who won over Mark Andolina, Adam Martin and Dave Stachura. The first Matches left a legacy behind led by many memorable shots and holes. Most notably, Adam Martin holed out for eagle on the ninth hole on day two of the matches, only to come up short to Joe Mathias by a single stroke (76-77). Adam followed this up the next day with a round of shear brilliance, where he shot a two-over-par 73 with one birdie, three bogeys, and an amazing 14 pars. Also memorable, was Mark Andolina's famed 8 on the 6th hole, during a round when Matt Bielawa was -2 through 7 holes and even through 13. Matt was named the Most Outstanding Player of the first Matches amassing a record of 3-0, while Adam had the best stroke performance, carding round of 79-77-73 for a 54 hole total of 229 (+16). Matt was the only other player to post three rounds in the 70's, with 78-75-77, for a 54 hole total of 232 (+19).

In the 2nd DiBella Memorial, things were much the same as Team V won the proceedings by a score of 6-3. The teams played 36 holes on day 1, where Team V exploded to a 4-2 lead. When the final round was played, Team V only needed to earn one more point to secure the DiBella Memorial Matches for a second consecutive year. Mr. Bielawa earned the 5th point with a scrappy victory over Mr. Andolina in a match that they both would rather forget. The 2nd DiBella Memorial was less eventful than the first for the simple reason that they were played in May, when the players weren't as sharp.
